It is quite common for students to apply to a certain program when they plan to study in Canada and later realize that it might not be the perfect fit for them. There may be cases when students might feel that they have the capacity to fit well in a more competitive learning environment. Following are some examples of the reasons why students wish to change their schools after starting their international education experience:

1. Mismatched Expectations

Let’s suppose you choose a computer science program at a University in Canada however, you are more inclined towards programming languages and coding, and you realize that this is the niche that you wish to specialize in. Now, if you have already started your education in Canada and found a program focusing on computer programing, it’s likely you would find more value in pursuing this instead of your current program. Similarly, if you are more interested in cooking and baking and you end up in a hotel management course, you can opt to transfer to a culinary-focused course.

2. Changed Long -Term Aspirations

Back in your home country, you might have significant aspirations to become a data engineer; however, after landing in Canada, you figured that it might not be your cup of tea. Or you might come to the realization that becoming a data engineer at a known company such as Amazon or Google would require you to have management skills rather than only data engineering – a course in Data Management or even General management might make you better suited to bag a job in such companies. If you are certain about this shift in interest or even career plans, you can switch to a management program that might even get you a co-op opportunity with your dream companies.

3. Found a Better University

Some students who qualify at the top of their batch in school or under-graduation might end up joining a program that doesn’t challenge their intellectual capabilities as much as they might have expected. If this is your case, then you are free to apply to a program that stimulates your intellectual capacity so that you get the kind of education that helps you grow in your field. As an international student, if you feel that you might have misjudged the program you have chosen, you can very well switch your college if you happen to find your dream program once you are already in Canada. That being said, you must also keep in mind a few conditions set out by the IRCC for international students who intend to change their institutions after landing in Canada.

Your study permit must be valid.
Since different provinces have different requirements, you must know the requirement of the province if you happen to change into an institution which is in an entirely different region of Canada. For example, a student moving to Quebec from Ontario will need an Acceptance Certificate (also known as QAC).
If you have stopped studying at your current institution, then you need to ensure that you start or resume your studies at your new institution within 150 days. Not doing so will be considered as not complying with your study permit conditions.
You must inform IRCC when you change your educational institution. If you fail to do so, your old institution will report you as an unregistered student. If this happens, then you might be considered to be breaking your study permit conditions and might be asked to leave the country.
